Take a Cruise
With beautiful estuaries and an endless sparkling ocean, Port Macquarie is one of the best places to see dolphins and humpback whales on the NSW Mid North Coast. Join a cruise to see the marine mammals up close or you can even spot whales from our spectacular headlands.
For an unforgettable experience, join a whale-watching cruise. Between May and November, these majestic creatures migrate along the coast of NSW. The most common encounters are with humpback whales, who are the stars of the annual whale pilgrimage because they leap out of the water. The abundance of small fish and prawns in this region draws the whales closer to our coastline.
The Cruise Terminal
Our main tour operator in Port Macquarie is The Cruise Terminal. Whale-watching cruises depart daily when the whales are migrating, and there are daily dolphin-watching river cruises all year.
You can enjoy a River Cruise aboard the authentic Chinese Junk with a friendly, experienced and knowledgeable Captain. They run a number of cruises on the Chinese Junk, a tasty fish & chip lunch cruise or a yummy morning tea cruise while taking in the picturesque Hastings River. If you enjoy a great sunset, why not go along to one of their Sunset Cruises. Port Macquarie looks spectacular during a sunset cruise, we recommend bringing your camera. Dolphins are spotted on almost every river cruise.
From May to November take a Whale Watching cruise on the Ocean Adventure 1 to see the incredible humpback whales breaching and playing in the waters as they migrate along our coastline. Be sure to book as cruises can fill up!
You can also take a cruise on the Port Venture River Princess. There are a number of different experiences on this boat including a historic river cruise or a fun boom net ride at twilight, or the lunch BBQ cruise. The boat, the River Princess, is an all-weather spacious 15 metre catamaran with two levels providing a variety of viewing aspects. It also has a licensed bar on board, and soft drink, bottled water and snacks can also be purchased in the saloon.
